Chapter 29: The Omniscient Mirror
Liu Mingsheng stared blankly at the confession document.
"If I confess, what will my sentence be?"
The Cleaner answered without hesitation.
"With crimes like yours, the death penalty is unavoidable."
Hearing it was the death penalty, Liu Mingsheng actually breathed a sigh of relief.
"Don't be in a hurry. Let me ask you a question first!"
The Cleaner took a pair of sunglasses from his pocket and put them on.
"Do you want to live?"
These four words felt like a question probing his very soul.
For a moment, a flicker of life returned to Liu Mingsheng's eyes.
He nodded frantically, his voice trembling.
"Of course I want to live! What do you want? Money?"
The Cleaner in sunglasses wagged a finger.
"I'll take you to a place. If you can stay there for thirty full days, you'll be free."
Liu Mingsheng agreed without a second thought.
"As long as I can live! Thirty days is nothing, I could do thirty years!"
The Cleaner gave a light laugh.
"Thirty years won't be necessary! If you agree, we'll sign a protocol."
As he spoke, he produced another document.
At the top of the document were several large characters.
[Volunteer Recruitment]
"Sign this protocol, and you can become a glorious volunteer!"
The Cleaner looked at Liu Mingsheng with a smile.
Liu Mingsheng immediately pressed his fingerprint onto the document.
"It's like finding light at the end of the tunnel!" he exclaimed, unable to contain himself.
He had been prepared for death, but the mere mention of survival made his mind shut down completely.
He had completely forgotten the Magic Mirror's trait.
The outcome cannot be changed.
The Cleaner nodded, then clapped his hands.
Another Cleaner in a sanitation uniform behind him stepped forward, holding a yellow vest.
"Put this on."
…………
Inside the Asylum.
The Magic Mirror had been contained.
The Doctor was leading a team to study it.
Lu Xiao was also observing on the side.
He was still quite curious about the Magic Mirror, and he also had questions he wanted to ask it.
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"How should we address you?"
He was speaking to the mirror.
On the mirror's surface, a human face appeared.
"You may call me the Magic Mirror, or the Omniscient Mirror."
The Doctor nodded, recording both names.
"What is the cost of asking you a question?"
The human face on the mirror grinned, revealing a terrifying smile.
"That also counts as asking me a question!"
"However, I can give you the answer to this one as a free gift."
The Doctor's face showed no expression.
The Omniscient Mirror answered.
"The cost of a question depends on the answer."
"If the answer to the question has a great impact on the world, then correspondingly, the cost will be great enough to have a significant impact on the world."
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"So, it requires an equivalent exchange, correct?"
The Omniscient Mirror replied.
"Correct. You are much smarter than that fool."
"That fool only asked stupid questions and tried to fool me with dirty flesh and blood!"
The 'fool' it referred to was Liu Mingsheng.
The Doctor nodded, a gleam of light visible through his monocle.
"I happen to have a question."
"How can humanity's current technological level achieve a breakthrough?"
The human face on the Omniscient Mirror grinned.
"The cost for the answer to that is something you humans cannot afford."
Hearing this answer, the Doctor showed no surprise.
He adjusted his monocle.
"Can you tell me what the cost is?"
The human face pondered for a moment, then said.
"That belongs to a second question, requiring a corresponding payment."
"Of course! The cost won't be too high."
The Doctor nodded but said nothing.
The human face continued.
"Sacrificing a brain rich with knowledge can purchase the answer to this question."
Just as Lu Xiao was pondering what constituted a 'brain rich with knowledge'.
The Doctor had already pushed the assistant next to him toward the Omniscient Mirror.
Amid the assistant's terrified screams, a human face emerged from the mirror's surface.
Its mouth opened to an enormous size, biting off the assistant's head in one gulp.
The other staff witnessing this couldn't help but shudder.
"Mmm! A rather good brain!"
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"Then, what is the answer to the question?"
The human face smacked its lips.
"To obtain the answer for a technological breakthrough, a god must be sacrificed."
Hearing this, the Doctor's eyes lit up.
"Sacrifice a god? Will any god do?"
The human face showed a scornful smile.
"Of course not."
Hearing the answer, a rare look of regret appeared on the Doctor's face.
The reason for his regret was that the Asylum currently contained a god.
S09- The Contaminated Creator!
Then, the human face began to tempt him.
"Want to know which god to sacrifice? Of course! That is another question!"
"But I can give you a huge discount on the answer!"
"Just sacrifice one million lives to me!"
"What do you think? I've already given you a ninety percent discount!"
Hearing this, even Lu Xiao's face twitched involuntarily.
But the words of the Omniscient Mirror were like a demon's whisper.
They coiled around the Doctor's ears, tempting him relentlessly.
The Doctor adjusted his monocle.
"When the opportunity arises, I will ask you this question."
Clearly, the Doctor had resisted the temptation through sheer force of will.
The staff now looked at the Doctor with fear.
When the Doctor pushed the assistant toward the mirror, they hadn't seen a hint of hesitation in him.
As if reading their thoughts, the Doctor glanced back at them.
"The investigation results regarding Glimmer's infestation by the Ghost-Face Moth are out."
His voice held no emotion, as if discussing a trivial matter.
"In his movements over the past month, he had physical contact with Glimmer."
The 'he' that the Doctor referred to was the assistant who had been pushed toward the Omniscient Mirror.
But judging by the staff's expressions, they clearly didn't believe it.
"Doctor! Even if there are suspicions, shouldn't an investigation procedure be initiated?" one staff member dared to question.
The Doctor adjusted his monocle but did not answer the person.
At that moment, the Omniscient Mirror spoke.
"So? Do you need to ask me for the answer to this question?"
The Doctor said calmly, "No need."
The human face expressed slight regret. "What a pity."
"Then, sir, do you have any other questions you wish to ask?"
The human face revealed a playful smile.
The Doctor thought for a moment, then looked at Lu Xiao.
"S292, do you have anything you want to ask?"
