Chapter 33: The Surgery to Cure Kidney Deficiency
A faint light appeared in Lu Xiao’s dead fish eyes.
It had to be said, Dart’s words had hit home.
No one else had managed to get through to him after all that talking.
He sprang to his feet in an instant.
“Sorry, I won’t entertain you any longer! I’m going to see my friend now!”
After Lu Xiao left, Slick patted Glimmer on the shoulder.
“Brother! I have to say, what you just said fired me up!”
“I hereby dub you Hot-Blooded Boy!”
Glimmer’s face went completely blank.
Dart scratched the back of his head.
“Let’s hope the prison doctor can guide him to make the right choice.”
As for the prison doctor’s thoughts, Dart couldn’t even begin to guess.
After all, they were different species. Only a weirdo like Lu Xiao could really interact with the prison doctor on that level.
…………
“Lu! What are you doing here?”
The prison doctor was in the middle of diagnosing an unlucky patient.
“Lu! Wait a moment, I need to diagnose this poor patient first!”
On the operating table lay a person wearing a yellow vest, struggling in terror.
As a disposable subject, his sole purpose was to provide data to the asylum’s researchers.
Or, as a sacrifice, to fulfill some twisted containment condition.
“Let go of me! I’m not sick! I’m perfectly healthy!”
The prison doctor’s beak opened and closed, producing a truly unpleasant sound.
“Patients always say they’re healthy! You must trust my diagnosis!”
“Friend! Trust me, you really are sick!”
He stretched his finger out and lightly drew it across the subject’s chest.
Immediately, the subject's skin and clothing were cut open.
Blood slowly seeped from the wound.
The prison doctor dabbed a bit of the subject’s blood on his finger, then leaned close to the beak and inhaled gently.
“Friend! I have good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear first?”
The subject froze.
“Good news?”
The prison doctor nodded and continued.
“The good news is that you really are sick!”
The subject almost went mad.
“How is that good news?”
The prison doctor ignored the question.
“The bad news is, your illness isn’t serious. A simple little surgery will cure you!”
The subject visibly relaxed.
It was the best news he had heard all day.
But Lu Xiao noticed a hint of regret in the prison doctor’s tone.
He stepped closer to the operating table.
“Doctor, what exactly is this poor patient suffering from?”
The prison doctor frowned.
“He just has a bit of kidney deficiency.”
“Oh! Then it’s really not too serious!”
Lu Xiao felt a little regretful as well.
Though it was minor, the prison doctor’s medical ethics were beyond doubt.
He quickly began the surgery.
First, he turned the patient over, then made an incision at the waist.
As he worked, he spoke to Lu Xiao.
“Lu! For minor kidney deficiency, a simple procedure like this can solve it completely!”
Lu Xiao listened with great interest, forgetting even his initial purpose.
The subject on the table let out a scream akin to a slaughtered pig.
Suddenly, the prison doctor stopped.
“Lu! I seem to have forgotten the anesthesia again!”
Hearing this, Lu Xiao felt slightly awkward.
He knocked the subject unconscious, then said:
“Doctor, where were we just now?”
The prison doctor nodded and resumed.
“For minor kidney deficiency, a simple little surgery can eradicate it entirely.”
Lu Xiao played the straight man.
“What kind of simple surgery?”
By now, the prison doctor was holding a reddish-brown mass.
Lu Xiao looked closely, it was clearly a kidney.
A sharp laugh rang from the prison doctor.
“A kidney removal surgery!”
Lu Xiao understood immediately.
“Doctor, what about his other kidney? Does it have kidney deficiency as well?”
The prison doctor nodded with satisfaction.
“Lu! You’ve learned to apply one example to another. If you chose medicine, you would become a great doctor!”
Thus, their academic discussion began.
Meanwhile, the poor kidney-deficient patient had both kidneys removed, without anesthesia.
…………
After stitching up the patient, Lu Xiao wiped sweat from his brow.
“A successful surgery! This patient will never be troubled by kidney deficiency again!”
“I’m sure he’ll be grateful to you, Prison Doctor.”
The prison doctor’s beak moved rapidly, his emotions clearly stirred.
“Lu! Have you ever considered studying medicine? I have a feeling if you did, you would surpass me in no time!”
Lu Xiao shook his head.
“No, my friend! Actually, I came to see you because I’m confused!”
The prison doctor was silent for a moment.
“Tell me, maybe I can help you.”
Lu Xiao nodded.
“It’s still about my curse.”
“A magical mirror told me that to resolve the curse, I would have to sacrifice the entire current world to obtain a solution!”
The prison doctor seemed unsurprised and diverted the topic.
“So, my friend, would you really sacrifice the whole world?”
Lu Xiao sank back into confusion.
“I don’t know!”
The prison doctor reached out, placing his hand over Lu Xiao’s head.
“Lu! You need to face your heart!”
“Now, tell me, would you trade the entire world for the answer you seek?”
Instinctively, Lu Xiao shook his head.
The prison doctor’s voice carried a note of relief.
“My friend! You’ve already made a choice, haven’t you?”
Lu Xiao froze, looking up at the prison doctor.
Before the three-meter-tall doctor, he seemed like a lost child.
The prison doctor withdrew his hand.
“Lu! Your heart doesn’t truly wish to trade the world for an answer.”
“You’re not confused.”
“You’re just afraid of the future.”
“Fear will make you feel confused.”
Hearing this, Lu Xiao fell into deep thought.
After a long while, he said:
“But I also don’t want to become a mindless, instinct-driven lump of flesh!”
“That would make me feel sick!”
The prison doctor’s sharp voice carried a trace of disappointment.
“My friend! Have you completely forgotten my advice?”
“That magical mirror is just a shortcut for seeking answers!”
“In the future, there may be more shortcuts like it!”
“But now, you’re entangled in this shortcut, wasting the little time you have!”
Hearing this, Lu Xiao’s body shivered.
Now he had fully understood.
The prison doctor had sent him to the real world to find a way to lift the curse.
And Lu Xiao had found the Omniscient Mirror, subconsciously believing it was the solution he sought.
Suddenly, everything became clear.
“Forgive me, my friend! I did not follow your advice!”
