Chapter 40: The Chief and The Director

The Round Table Meeting was the highest-level meeting within the Warden organization.

Presided over by the Executive Management Council, with members of the supreme office attending as observers.

It was a multi-person meeting conducted through virtual holographic technology.

Leaders of all asylum across the entire human world were mandated to participate in this meeting.

The preparation time for the Round Table Meeting was one hour.

During this period, all the asylum's leaders, regardless of what they were doing, had to immediately set aside their tasks to attend.

The Doctor straightened the white lab coat draped over his shoulders, then carefully polished his monocle.

After completing these preparations, the Doctor sat in his office chair, quietly waiting for the meeting to begin.

…………

“Good morning, everyone! Thank you for your contributions to humanity!”

A pleasant female voice rang in the ears of every participant of the Round Table Meeting.

The Doctor slowly opened his eyes and scanned his surroundings.

He now found himself inside a building resembling a temple.

Before him was a massive circular conference table.

Above his head was a chaotic void, surrounded by towering white jade pillars.

The Doctor adjusted the non-existent monocle on his face.

Clearly, this was a virtual space, much like a VR game scene.

Within the temple, beams of light descended from time to time.

Each beam of light represented the seating of one person.

Five individuals sat in high positions at the head of the round table.

These five were the five members of the Executive Management Council.

These five council members were detached from all asylums, they only represented the Executive Management Council.

Below them were the higher-ups of the supreme office.

Finally, there were the asylum leaders like the Doctor.

Sitting next to the Doctor was an elderly man with white hair.

The old man smiled slightly at the Doctor.

“Doctor! Good to see you again!”

The Doctor replied with a hint of respect.

“Mentor, it’s been a while!”

That old man was the Doctor’s mentor and also the leader of China's C01 Containment Facility.

Codename: ‘The Chief’!

The Chief glanced at the Doctor and chuckled lightly.

“I heard your C03 snatched J01’s S137?”

Hearing this, the Doctor said with a straight face,

“S137 appeared within C03’s jurisdiction due to a containment breach. According to Warden regulations, I have the right and the obligation to contain it!”

The Chief shook his head with an amused smile.

“Why put on an act in front of me? I was the one who taught you the Warden regulations!”

As he spoke, the Chief smoothed his white hair.

“Just use S137 to exchange for some benefits; no need to hold on too tightly.”

“J01 treats S137 like a treasure, but for us, S137’s usefulness is just so-so.”

The Doctor nodded, that had been his original intention.

The reason he had refused J01’s exchange request at the time was twofold.

First, it needed to be discussed in a formal setting like this, and J01 needed to bring it up themselves.

This way, the Doctor could secure more benefits for C03.

More importantly, the second point, the Doctor wanted to annoy J01’s leader.

The Chief continued, his tone becoming somewhat heavy.

“This meeting will most likely concern the S301 you contained.”

“Have you thought about how to protect S301?”

The Doctor shrugged.

“He told me to play it by ear.”

The Chief paused for a moment, then laughed heartily.

“After all these years, you haven’t changed a bit!”

“Oh well! Anyway, with that one around, even if we ultimately fail to protect S301, we won’t be at a loss.”

The Doctor shrugged indifferently.

Sitting on the other side of the Doctor was a young man.

His codename was ‘The Director’, leading China's C02 Containment Facility.

Hearing the conversation between the Doctor and the Warden, he chimed in.

“Doctor! Compared to S301, I’m more interested in the S292 you contained a while ago!”

He pursed his lips into a smile, seeming somewhat shy.

“How about you name a price?”

The Doctor glanced at him.

“Sorry, I have no plans to trade S292.”

The Director didn’t seem to mind. He leaned back in his chair and said with a light laugh,

“S292’s data has hardly changed at all. Doctor, you aren’t planning to hoard the research results, are you?”

The Doctor nodded very seriously.

“I am indeed considering that.”

The Director was silent for a moment, then chuckled lightly.

“Doctor, has anyone ever told you you’re bad at conversation?”

The Chief murmured, “I’ve mentioned this issue to him.”

The Doctor nodded again, very seriously, “Hmm! Yes, my mentor told me.”

The Director immediately facepalmed.

He felt talking to the Doctor was much more mentally exhausting than researching the anomalies.

The three of them were all leaders of Chinese containment facilities.

So their chat was conducted on an independent private channel with anti-eavesdropping measures.

Therefore, they weren’t worried about anyone listening in.

Just then, the five council members seated at the head exchanged glances. Then one of them stood up and announced clearly.

His voice sounded in the public channel.

“The meeting is now in session!”

“First, on behalf of the council members, I thank all of you present for your contributions!”

After saying this, he bowed.

Then he launched into a long-winded opening speech.

The Chief listened with great interest.

The Doctor and the Director, however, seemed on the verge of falling asleep.

After the opening speech concluded, the council member said in a grave tone,

“First, I inform everyone of one matter, the investigation procedure regarding U01 has concluded, and the investigation results are out.”

As his words fell, a light screen appeared before everyone.

On it were Enzo’s personal details and the results of the investigation into U01.

“Mr. Smith, do you have anything to add?”

Everyone’s gaze fell on a middle-aged man with silver hair.

He was the leader of the U01 containment facility, Smith.

Smith stood up, his expression filled with deep remorse.

“I believe everyone has seen the investigation results.”

“Regarding this, I am deeply grieved. It was due to our negligence that such a serious consequence occurred.”

“Fortunately, it was discovered in time, preventing greater losses to our Warden organization.”

“Here, I must sincerely thank Dr. Doctor!”

After saying this, he bowed deeply in the Doctor’s direction.

Hearing this, the Director said disdainfully beside him,

“Tch! Shifting the blame onto the Saints again.”

He said this because the investigation results pointed all the blame at the Saints.

The Chief said with a hearty laugh,

“Diverting conflict has always been their usual tactic!”

“Just treat it as him farting.”

The Doctor touched the frame of his non-existent glasses but said nothing.

After straightening up, Smith continued,

“Everyone, rest assured, all members involved have been investigated. I guarantee such a thing will not happen a second time!”

“According to Warden regulations, dereliction of duty causing damage to the Warden organization warrants suspension and punishment for the person responsible!”

“Councilman, I am willing to accept punishment!”

The councilman nodded.

“Very well, Mr. Smith. Your awareness is admirable!!”
