Chapter 41: Sharing S301
The Chief looked at the Doctor beside him and chuckled.
“Looks like the punishment for this incident won’t be too severe!”
“Did you two strike some kind of deal?”
The Doctor’s tone was indifferent.
“Hmm. I needed S097.”
The Chief nodded.
“That makes sense then. Smith will probably get a symbolic suspension.”
The Director said with some disdain,
“If they keep playing like this, the Wardens are doomed sooner or later!”
“The organization might as well change its name to ‘Two-Faced’!”
The Chief nodded noncommittally, then let out a long sigh.
“The higher-ups in the Wardens have long forgotten the original purpose!”
“Internally, it’s a heap of loose sand, but they’ve certainly mastered the tricks of bureaucracy!”
“I’m very worried that one day the ‘Gate’ will be breached if this continues!”
The Director shrugged.
“We just need to manage our own little plot of land properly!”
“If they love to play, let them play!”
As he spoke, he suddenly looked at the Doctor and made a sound of surprise.
“Doctor, you couldn’t have had this idea all along, could you? Is that why you hid S292’s data?”
The Chief also looked at the Doctor.
He was finding this student of his increasingly hard to read.
Given the Doctor’s capabilities, something like stalling containment subject data clearly shouldn’t happen.
The Doctor nodded, saying gravely,
“I suspect the characteristics of the ‘Gate’ are gradually failing!”
Hearing this, both the Chief and the Director frowned simultaneously.
“Explain in detail!”
The Doctor habitually adjusted his non-existent monocle.
“According to S292’s account, he survived in the Dark Prison for three years!”
“Logically, we should have discovered him much earlier!”
“Based on this, I began to suspect the ‘Gate’!”
“Then I had my assistant pull the Warden mission records from the system for the last ten years!”
“From an overall perspective, the number of anomalous occurrences has been increasing year by year over the past decade!”
“This is very abnormal!”
After listening to the Doctor, the Chief also came around.
“I overlooked that point!”
“Thinking about it carefully, it really does seem to be the case!”
The Director murmured,
“Is it possible the ‘Gate’ has been contaminated?”
The Doctor nodded.
“That is precisely my suspicion!”
“I need more time to research this point.”
The three fell silent.
On the other side.
The overall punishment for the U01 facility had been decided.
Sure enough, Smith only received a symbolic suspension.
Then, the councilman looked towards the Doctor.
“Dr. Doctor! First, let me congratulate you on successfully containing S301!”
“The existence of S301 is an extremely important containment subject, both for humanity and for us Wardens!”
“Therefore, I am requesting you now, could you share S301 for joint research by everyone?”
“At that time, S301 will be contained by our Executive Management Council!”
The Doctor shook his head without hesitation.
“I’m sorry, Councilman, I refuse.”
These words caused an uproar among those present.
At this moment, a short, middle-aged man stood up, righteous and indignant.
“Doctor! Do you intend to be selfish in such a major matter? Why are you unwilling to share such an important containment subject?”
“Do you know the importance of this subject to humanity?”
“Do you remember the rules and obligations of the Wardens?”
The speaker was none other than the leader of the J01 facility, his codename was Artisan.
His tone wasn’t one of questioning, it sounded more like an accusation.
Leaders from other facilities also began discussing about the Doctor.
Since they were all using private channels, the scene was extremely quiet, without any noisy sounds.
Everyone’s gaze fell on the Doctor.
The Doctor slowly stood up, his voice very calm.
“Mr. Artisan, according to Warden regulations, for containment subjects that have already been secured, any transfer is prohibited if absolute safety cannot be guaranteed!”
“Therefore, my refusal of the Councilman’s request is perfectly reasonable!”
The Doctor’s words were almost flawless.
Although everyone knew this regulation, almost no one actually followed it.
Private trades of containment subjects happened frequently.
Even the Executive Management Council turned a blind eye to such matters.
As long as no accidents occurred, the Council generally wouldn't intervene.
In this setting, the Doctor invoked the Warden regulations.
No one could say the Doctor was wrong.
This was equivalent to publicly slapping the faces of the Executive Management Council and the Supreme Office.
Behind closed doors was one thing, but openly no one dared to expose the truth.
Artisan was clearly prepared.
He said to the councilman,
“Councilman, special matters require special handling. Although the regulation exists, the importance of S301 warrants breaking the regulation!”
“For the sake of humanity, we should experiment on and research S301 as soon as possible!”
The councilman nodded and looked at the Doctor.
“Yes, Dr. Doctor, our Council shares this opinion!”
“According to Warden regulations, this matter requires a vote by all present! Do you have any objections?”
The Doctor shrugged.
He had anticipated this outcome.
“As you wish, Councilman.”
After saying this, the Doctor said no more.
The councilman announced clearly,
“Then, everyone, let’s begin the vote!”
“Those in favor of transferring S301, please raise your hand!”
For a moment, ninety-nine percent of those present raised their hands.
The Chief chuckled.
“Their calculations are quite shrewd. I just wonder if they’ll even get a chance to see S301!”
The Director also wore the expression of someone watching a good show.
Soon, the councilman announced the voting result.
“The motion passes!”
“Dr. Doctor, do you have any further objections?”
The Doctor stood up again, talking nonsense with a completely straight face.
“Councilman, I have no objection to sharing S301. However, my side paid a great price to achieve its containment!”
“Therefore, my side wants to apply for the compensation procedure!”
As these words fell, two people present looked extremely displeased: Artisan was one, and the other was Smith, who had just been suspended.
The councilman nodded.
“The application is reasonable! Approved!”
The Doctor nodded and sat down.
Seeing the Doctor agree so readily, the Director cast a suspicious look.
“You agreed so readily? You haven’t been contaminated by an anomaly, have you?”
The Doctor rubbed his forehead.
“I also think I should have acted more reluctant just now.”
The Director: “...”
The Chief, who knew the Doctor better, asked hesitantly,
“Do you have some other arrangement?”
The Doctor just nodded slightly without speaking.
The councilman at the head continued,
“Now we move to the next agenda item!”
“Dr. Doctor, this also concerns your Asylum C03!”
“It’s regarding the issue of ownership of containment subject S09 - The Contaminated Creator!”
PS: These two chapters lay down many clues, which might seem a bit dull.
